They Are Important To Me
| Для мене не ті, хто заперечує Голодомор важливі, а ті, хто визнає цю трагедію мого народу. Я певно ніколи так не відчуваю наскільки Україна велика і наскільки єдина вона як цього осіннього тижня, коли українці довкола всього світу відзначають сумну річницю Голодомору. Лише подивіться хто стоїть на сцені, хто промовляє до мене: тут і український іммігрант з Волині або Галичини – його батьки і діди ніколи не бачили мертвих тіл заморених людей на обочині дороги… але вони тут і переживають за це так сильно. Депутат альбертійського і канадійського парламенту українського походження – їх батьки і діди лише читали про Голодомор у газетах тут в Канаді, але вони тут на сцені сповнені переживань і памяті про Голодомор. І я, чия бабуся лише пошепки говорила про “великий голод” багато років тому, хто насправді несподіваний нащадок того вимореного покоління на сході України звідки мої корені… я також тут. Не на сцені цього разу, але одного дня я буду. Я маю сказати: “Дякую вам усім за те, що ви робите для памяті по всім вбитим, замореним українцям, неважливо з якої частинки України вони були”. | To me it is not those deniers of Holodomor are important, but those who recognise it as a true tragedy of my people. I probably never feel how Ukraine is big and how united it is as this week of autumn when Ukrainians around the World celebrate the Holodomor Awareness Week. Just take a look who is standing at the stage ans who make speeches: an Ukrainian immigrant from Volyn or Galicia – their parents have never seen dead bodies of starved civil people on streets… but they are here and they care about it so much. PM of Albertian or Canadian parliament of Ukrainian origin – their parents and grandparents just read about Holodomor in newspapers, but they are here on the stage aware of Holodomor. And myself whose grandmother was whispering to me about the “great famine” many years ago, myself who is in fact an unexpected decent of that starved to death generation on East of Ukraine from where my roots are… I am here too. Not on the stage this day, but I one day I will. I have to say: “Thank you everyone for being here and for doing this awareness for all killed Ukrainians whatever part of Ukraine they are”. |

Thank you for sharing this with all of us Stanislav, Paulette truely an inspiring person. We need many more like her to get the word out., about the Holodomor and other issues related to Ukaine. So much disinformation planted by the Soviet propaganda machine.

Приємно бачити, що у світі це знають і розуміють. І дуже сумно, що на території, де цей злочин відбувся цього не розуміють й ігнорують.
Very good, that the world knows and understand. And very sad, that on teritory, where that cruelty happened, people don’t understand and ignore.

It is very gratifying that as a newcomer to Canada you recognize and appreciate how deep the roots of Ukrainian Canadians run.
The suffering of our ancestors and relatives (distant or close) remains in our psyche, because it’s in our past. And it will take more than a generation or two, or a century or two, to get over it.
So yes, we remember … because we simply can’t forget.
